I couldn’t tell you why a stable pseudonym ends up hitting the sweet spot, but anecdotally, it matches my experiences. There needs to be enough friction to spinning up a new account that folks are reluctant to do it just to talk trash, but not so heavy a process that no one will sign up.
I think that’s part of it.
However, I also suspect that an online identity that is stable but which is also separate from one’s real-world identity could generate more robust discussions because while you’re invested in it, it also provides you with more latitude to explore and take chances.
