I spent the morning watching middle-schoolers play basketball—my kid is on one of our town’s two teams—and trying hard not to flash back to the terrible experience of playing CYO ball when I was that age.
Fortunately, these kids look to be having a lot more fun than I ever did.
I also appreciate that, at least at this level—no one is taking it overly seriously. The professionalization of kids’ sports is crazy. We have managed to avoid it thus far but we have multiple friends who find themselves spending tons of money and are constantly driving their kids all over creation at all hours for multiple sports.
