Because the goal is, in effect, to grow a bigger pie for this kind of service, I think Meta would be wise to think about how to help build an ecosystem of interoperable tools and services.

Except their goal is not to grow a bigger pie; their goal is to sell more advertising because that is what generates revenue. Anything that gets in the way of that—e.g., third-party apps that allow people to participate in the service without seeing ads—will, at best, be living on borrowed time.

In theory, I agree with Ben’s overall point. We should generally welcome products and services that grow the ActivityPub/federated ecosystem. In practice, however, Meta’s track record makes me highly disinclined to assume good intentions on their part.
