Consequences of spending two straight days in the rack room

My apologies for the dearth of posts the last few days. One of our servers at work went down over the weekend, and I have spent almost the entirety of the last two days holed up in the server room. As a result, sitting in front of the computer is about the last thing I feel like doing when I get home.

Currently, I’m caught up in licensing hell for our outdated mail server, and am waiting for a West Coast support center to open so that I can call them. Consequently, I find myself with some time to think about other stuff. For instance, I’m embarassed to admit that it wasn’t until I turned on NPR this morning that I found out that the President announced his nomination to replace Sandra Day O’Connor last night.

I haven’t really had a chance to do much research on this John Roberts character. At first glance (short of any Clarence Thomas “pubic hairs on soda cans”-style revelations), he seems like a fairly reasonable nomination. However, the fact that the Christian Right isn’t up in arms over the pick makes me highly suspicious.

So far, the only substantive things I’ve heard is that he has stated that while he is opposed to abortion, nothing in his personal views would prevent him from upholding the established law of the land, e.g., Row v. Wade. At the same time, there is his signature as Deputy Solicitor General for the first Bush administration stating that administration’s opinion that Roe “was wrongly decided and should be overruled.”

At the moment, I think it’s too early to tell what kind of Justice this guy would be.
