I am sure smarter people than me have already thought about this, but I was listening to some pundit/commentator-types talk about how LLMs can “pass the Turing Test” and it made me think about how 1) the Turing Test was a thought experiment, not some objective measure, and 2) since the test is based on whether or not a system can convince actual humans that it is intelligent, increasing understanding of how LLMs actually work and the resulting skepticism about them would impede their ability to pass the test.
