This is a true, and web hosting is rapidly heading down the same road: After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel. The oligopoly has won.

That’s not to say that everyone should be hosting their own email—even absent the oligopoly issue, setting up and running a mail server is a legit pain in the ass and not for the faint of heart. There should be more choices, though—more opportunities for small operations.
