Call me crazy, but maybe meat should be more expensive, and maybe people in the US should not eat so much of it.

It is unfortunate that the frame here is “Rich people can afford food that poor people can’t,” but the gross income inequality in this country distorts every conversation.

Our culture promotes the consumption of meat at levels far above what is healthy. In order to be able to do that at scale, we have created production systems that are unsustainable and easily disrupted, and we have externalized the human and environmental costs in order to keep the price of meat artificially low.

Don’t eat so much meat. When you do, at least make sure it is produced locally and sensibly.
